Anxiety can be the result of stress or trauma

When you encounter stressors too often, the resulting feelings of anxiety can create cognitive habits that, over time, can become chronic anxiety. If you can’t seem to shed constant feelings of nervousness or worry, you may benefit from mental healthcare.

Frequently asked questions

To diagnose anxiety, your healthcare provider will conduct a diagnostic interview which contains a series of questions about your symptoms, daily life, and medical history. They’ll then analyze that information using criteria from the DSM-5 to determine whether you have anxiety or a related condition, such as panic disorder.

Certain side effects—such as nausea or weight gain—are a normal part of getting used to your medication. These milder side effects usually only last a few weeks or months and abate over time.

However, if your side effects persist, become worse, or you begin having severe side effects, you should contact your healthcare provider right away so they can adjust your medication.

This is a decision you’ll have to make based on your circumstances. Those with severe or hereditary anxiety may decide to take medication indefinitely. Others, however, may be able to taper off of their medication once they’ve learned healthy coping skills.
